ISO's Databases Serve the Industry

ImageWhen insurers, regulators, and other participants in the property/casualty industry need information, they turn to ISO.

Our expertise in data management — and our deep knowledge of insurance — make ISO the logical choice for collecting, processing, and interpreting information about risk. And ISO develops and implements effective controls to ensure data quality, privacy, and security.

ISO maintains several of the largest and most important insurance databases in the world. Here's background on just a few of them.

ISO's statistical database

Each year, insurers send ISO more than 2 billion detailed records of insurance premiums collected and losses paid. At any one time, our computers store more than 14 billion records. For commercial lines, that data represents 70 to 75 percent of the entire industry's premium volume. For personal lines, the data represents about a third of the industry's premium.

ISO's professional staff members analyze the data and turn it into meaningful information. We compile the data into aggregate insurance statistics, available to insurers and state regulators. That service helps insurers comply with state requirements to report data and gives regulators information from many insurers in a common format.

ISO also uses the data to prepare a wide variety of other products that serve the insurance marketplace.

ISO ClaimSearch® database

The ISO ClaimSearch® database contains information on approximately 650 million claims. Insurers and other participants submit claim reports — more than 210,000 a day — in all lines of business. Insurers, law enforcement agencies, and government fraud bureaus use the information to detect and prevent fraud.

A-PLUSTM databases

ISO's Automobile-Property Loss Underwriting Service (A-PLUSTM) has built the industry's most complete auto and property claims databases for use in underwriting. And the Coverage VerifierSM database provides information about current and prior insurance policies to help insurers make better underwriting and pricing decisions.

SPI Plus® database

ISO's Specific Property Information (SPI Plus®) database is the fastest and most comprehensive source of underwriting and rating data for commercial properties. The database contains loss costs and other vital information — collected through on-site surveys — on approximately 3 million specifically rated and class-rated buildings. The system also delivers information on more than 5.4 million individual businesses occupying those buildings.

Many others

ISO and its subsidiaries offer a broad array of other databases for special purposes.
